Android 4.0.4 ICS update in Greece for Motorola RAZR

According to Motorola’s Ice Cream Sandwich software update schedule, the GSM version of the RAZR is bound to get the desired Android update package any moment now. But as it happens, one happy RAZR owner in Greece got the official ICS update earlier than everyone else. It all happened when the RAZR owner in question had a problem with his device and brought it to Greek carrier Cellcom’s customer care center. When he collected it, he got a notification, and his smartphone updated to Android 4.0.4. When asked if Greece is about to get the over-the-air ICS update, both Motorola and Cellcome responded negatively. Perhaps the guys in the customer care center flashed some of their internal testing ROMs, by mistake. This would suggest that even though the update isn’t official just yet, it’s already undergoing testing and it should become available soon.

HTC One V in Canadian market

Rumors suggest that the HTC One V will be coming to Canada soon with the carrier Bell. The HTC One V has been available in many countries around the world, but surprisingly, it hasn’t found its way to Canada. Until now. The HTC One V is the smaller, cheaper version of the popular HTC One smartphone. Compared to its big brothers, the HTC One S and X, the HTC One V has a smaller screen, lower resolution, and is a bit slower on the hardware side as well. The new smartphone has a 1 GHz single core CPU, 3.7 inch screen with 800 x 480 resolution, 1GB of internal memory (with microSD option to expand), and a 5 megapixel camera. The HTC One V is thought of a “starter” smartphone for those first time smartphone buyers, as it’s rather simple and cheap compared to its bigger siblings. The HTC One V is powered by the latest version of Android, 4.0.

BlackBerry dock from RIM

A new patent application suggests a BlackBerry dock made by RIM. However, this dock isn’t just a simple charger station like many other BlackBerry docks. The RIM designed BlackBerry dock is a “desk dock” that not only charges the smartphone, but connects it to a handset or regular type telephone. As the picture above shows, you can simply dock your BlackBerry and use it as a regular phone. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen such a design, but apparently RIM thinks it’s original enough to warrant a patent application. The BlackBerry dock patent application was submitted last year, however, we dunno how likely it is to be approved. With all the troubles RIM is facing these days, perhaps they should spend their R&D resources on competing with Apple and Android instead.

Development of Google tablet

Google tablet is in development at the search giant. Rumor has it that Google is working on an Android powered tablet and that it might reveal it this summer at Google IO. Google already tried with its own smartphone — the Nexus — which didn’t fare very well against the iPhone and competing Android handsets. The Google Tablet is said to be made from ground up by engineers at Google, and isn’t based on any previous products, like the Nexus was. The Google Tablet is said to be a “sleek, thin, and light” device which would retail at $250. This leads us to believe that the tablet will most likely compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire, rather than the iPad. However, the source doesn’t mention any screen sizes nor other features besides a targeted $250 price point. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors about Google building their own tablet. Ever since the iPad was introduced, Google has been rumored to be working on a Google tablet that’s powered by Android. This time, they may just be ready to launch one.

Samsung Galaxy Beam with projector

Mobile World Congress 2012 will about to start and internet has been giving us rumors before the companies can actually showcase their mobiles. One device that we have heard is the Samsung Galaxy Beam. What makes it different? Accordingly it is built with a projector that uses 15 lumens lamp that has the capability to project a 50-inch wide HD images. As far as we can remember there are devices that were equipped with a projector though they did not gain much buzz so they just faded in the limelight. We will be looking at this device in the days to come in Barcelona. By the way some information suggest that the device is powered a 1GHz dual-core processor, 5 megapixel camera at the back and 1.3 megapixel on the front, a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display. On the OS side it is equipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Acer CloudMobile

Acer has created buzz around its upcoming CloudMobile Android smartphone. The yet to be announced handset has just won an iF design award for it looks. The Acer CloudMobile is said to feature a 4.3″ HD screen, Dolby sound, and a body less than 10mm thick. On the software side, the Acer CloudMobile is said to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. The device will also be the first to implement Acer’s own cloud technology.Expect to see Acer CloudMobile get unveiled at MWC later this month with retail availability scheduled for Q3 this year.

LG Optimus L3 E400 goes to Sweden

LG’s latest Optimus L3 E400 budget smartphone has gone up for pre-order at a Swedish online retail store. The smartphone, despite lacking a massive spec sheet, is bound to bring a serious dash of good looks to the market for lower end Android handsets.
There is no information on the CPU or RAM of the device. It features a 3.2″ display with the rather lowly resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. A 3MP snapper is present on the back. MicroSD card slot is at your service as well, along with full connectivity suite. There is even an FM radio present. The Optimus L3 will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box.

LG Spectrum

Verizon Wireless announced that the LG Spectrum 4G LTE is now available with a starting price tag of $199.99 with 2-year contract. Powered by Google’s Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3, the Spectrum features a massive 4.5-inch IPS display with 1280 x 720 resolution, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8 megapixel rear facing camera, 1830 mAh battery and connectivity with Verizon’s 4G LTE network. When it comes to the cream of the crop, the Spectrum is definitely up there. Of course, we expect to see quad-core Tegra 3 powered devices hitting the market later this year but for the mean time we would say it’s safe to bet on the Spectrum. Via MobileWhack

Nokia C7 on a prosthetic arm of Trevor Prideaux

Trevor Prideaux might seem to be wearing your typical prosthetic arm until you take a second and much closer look at it. What he has there definitely has nothing to do with just an extension of his body so that he looks good when wearing a long-sleeved shirt, and while he has no vendetta against any sperm whales or other sea creature, Mr Prideaux has a wish to own a prosthetic arm with a dock inside that can hold his smartphone within. Kind of a neat idea actually, although it would be a shame if the prosthetic had to change from time to time each time the smartphone is upgraded to a different model.

Technicians at the Exeter Mobility Centre were part of this particularly ground-breaking limb, where prosthethist Steve Gallichan, technician Les Street and undergraduate worker Sarah Bennett managed to roll out the prototype of Mr Prideaux’s request in a matter of just five weeks. Using a laminated fibre cast of the phone, they managed to build a prosthetic that fits Mr Prideaux’s smartphone inside – perfectly, it seems.

He’s using a Nokia C7, and it sits pretty inside. If you are curious as to wonder why Steve did not bother with an iPhone, it is not for the want of trying. He did approach Apple for a blank case of the iPhone for fitting and testing purposes, but he got turned down instead.
