Laptops in Class: A must have?

laptop

I never had a laptop when I was in college but my sister who is now in a university urges me to give her a laptop. Accordingly she will use it while having her class. She said their professor told them to bring one. What could be her professor’s point? Can a laptop really helps in improving students’ performance while in classroom?

I’ve just read from the web that it is now common to use laptops during classes. Universities in the US encourage the use of these gadgets to promote technological literacy. Quoted from Yahoo Tech “Word Processors can actually improve students sentence coherence“. It really does, with the advances of its features, students can now check the grammars and spellings. If only laptops only had that kind of software, but since it contains features like internet and games. Distraction is one major problem of using laptops. Instead of listening to the teachers, students focus more of their attention in games, social networking and chats. So the tendency is a lower comprehension on the subject matter.

I’m not really sure if I should grant my sister this kind of gadget. What do you think? is it a must have in class?
